Maaike Kalkhoven

2000

Maaike Kalkhoven is a socially engaged visual artist who creates art with people, not just for them. Central to her practice is the idea of encounter — meeting others through art, sharing stories, and looking at the world and each other with fresh eyes.

By making art together, Maaike opens space for dialogue about bigger social themes. Her projects often blur the line between participant and artist, inviting people to connect through creativity.

She specializes in ceramics and teaches ceramic classes both in her studio and on location. Her studio, De STU in Rotterdam, is a collective of nine young female artists. With De STU, Maaike aims to offer a platform for young makers, foster collaboration, and build bridges within the neighborhood. "My studio is a place of connection."

Maaike graduated from ArtEZ in Arnhem and continues to work at the intersection of community, craft, and social dialogue.
